Keeping Your Millington Air Fresh When Driving With a Clean Cabin Air Filter

Posted November 28, 2017 3:32 AM

Pop quiz: What is a cabin air filter?

A. A filter for your Millington house?
B. A fresh, piney scent?
C. A filter for the passenger compartment of your car?

Clever you, it's C.

A cabin air filter cleans the outside air before it comes into the passenger compartment of your vehicle. It filters out common NJ air particles like dust, pollen, spores, bacteria, pollutants, exhaust gas, odors and even sparrows.

These high tech filters can block particles larger than 3 microns. By contrast, a grain of sand is about 200 microns.

Not all Millington vehicles have cabin air filters. They are fairly new on the scene in NJ. Last check, about 40 percent of new vehicles sold in Millington come with cabin air filters, but the number is growing every year.

Cabin air filters make driving a lot more pleasant for people in Millington. Your vehicle can be a haven during our NJ allergy season with very little dust and pollen getting into the cabin. Of course, like all filters, the cabin air filter eventually gets clogged. When this happens, your heating and air conditioning flow can become restricted. The filter can even get kind of smelly.

Check your owner's manual for replacement guidelines. If your vehicle owner's manual doesn't mention your cabin air filter, ask your friendly and knowledgeable service advisor at Long Hill Auto Service for a recommendation. It's usually every year or 12,000 miles /19,000 kilometers. Change it sooner if you drive in dusty conditions around the Millington area, or if you start to notice a funky smell coming from your vents.

The team at Long Hill Auto Service urges Millington drivers to keep their cabin air filter cleans. It may not help with your brother-in-law in the backseat, but it will make your driving experience around Millington more enjoyable.

Come by and we'll take a look at your cabin air filter for you.

The Easy Way to Save Cash in Millington

Posted November 22, 2017 8:20 AM

The hottest NJ news story may be different every day, but there's one topic that seems to come up over and over again – the price of gas in Millington. If you feel like most of your paycheck goes into your gas tank, this post is for you. Here are several basic things people in Millington can do to greatly reduce their gas consumption, save money, and help the environment. You can really improve your fuel economy by how you drive – but first, here's a review of things you can do for your vehicle that'll save gas no matter how you drive.

The first one for Millington drivers is keeping tires properly inflated. That can save 2 miles per gallon/.85 km per liter. Driving on low tires is like driving through sand – your car just has to work harder. Most Millington service centers will fill up your tires for free, so just ask Long Hill Auto Service. Also, make a habit of checking your tire pressure whenever you fill up. Many Millington gas stations have an air hose you can use for free.

Another important item is to keep your air filter clean. An air filter all clogged up with dirt and bugs doesn't let enough clean air through to efficiently burn fuel. Using a dirty air filter will cost you almost 2 miles per gallon/.85 km per liter in reduced fuel economy. And worn spark plugs can cost about the same. A spark plug can fire as many as 3,000,000 times for every 1,000 miles/1,600 km driven. Check the vehicle owner's manual for replacement recommendations.

The biggest item is the oxygen sensor. This device provides the engine management computer with information it needs to fine-tune the fuel/air mix. When that's messed up it can cost Millington vehicles up to 3 miles per gallon/1.3 km per liter. And of course, there's dirty or substandard oil. Dirty oil causes extra drag. The wrong grade may be too thick. That's another .4 miles per gallon/.17 km per liter right there.

One item Millington residents seldom think about is their gas cap. A worn, loose or missing gas cap can cost another 2 miles per gallon/.85 km per liter. Adding up all of these worn, missing or sub-par items leads to a total of almost 11.4 miles per gallon/4.85 km per liter in reduced fuel economy! And with current gas prices in the Millington area, the cost really adds up. Taking care of these simple maintenance items will save Millington drivers at the pump.

Now most vehicles aren't missing on all of these items, but think about which ones might affect you right now! And don't forget tune-ups, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid, fuel system cleaning, wheels out of alignment, PCV valve, fuel filter and other services spelled out in your owner's  manual.

Long Hill Auto Service knows all this stuff and can tell you when you're scheduled to take care of each item. Create a system of your own to track your service schedules, or just use the computer system at Long Hill Auto Service – which may also be updated with recall notices and maintenance schedule items from your vehicle manufacturer.

Automotive Tips from Long Hill Auto Service: Tire Replacement Overview

Posted November 12, 2017 11:03 AM

Tires are an expensive purchase, so knowing when tires should be replaced is important for Millington drivers. Tires will just wear out with normal use. The depth of the tread on your tire determines how well it will stop, start and steer – especially in wet conditions. 4/32th of an inch (3.2 mm) of tire tread is considered a safe amount of tread.

Uneven tread wear can be a symptom of other problems, and simply replacing your tires will not prevent the same uneven wear from happening to the new tires. At Long Hill Auto Service in Millington, we can inspect your tires for excessive or uneven wear. Unusual wear may lead to further inspection of steering, suspension or alignment problems. We can help with necessary repairs and with getting you the right tires for your needs.

Long Hill Auto Service Helps You Decipher the Menu Board: Part 2

Posted November 6, 2017 4:41 AM

NJ service centers have a menu board that lists the services they provide. Some Millington drivers may not be familiar with all of the items on the board so here is a quick description of some of the typical services that might be listed.

Long Hill Auto Service fuel system cleaning: Over time, the vehicle fuel system gets gum and varnish built up. A fuel system cleaning gets rid of that and cleans out the fuel injectors. Saves gas, by the way.

Long Hill Auto Service headlamp replacement: Halogen and standard headlamps gradually fade. It's usually good to change them every year or so.

Long Hill Auto Service inspections: Millington drivers get inspections for many reasons. Maybe they're going on a trip or just want to make sure their vehicle's ready for a NJ summer or winter. Maybe they just bought a used vehicle and want to give it the once over. An inspection may reveal some things that are broken or are getting close to having a problem.

Long Hill Auto Service oil change: There are several options: Some Millington centers offer just an oil change and new filter as an option. Most will also check and top off all of your other fluids and do a quick visual inspection with a full service oil change. In my way of thinking, the full service option is best because it makes sure you have adequate fluids and may uncover an emerging problem. There may also be options for higher mileage fluids or an upgrade to synthetic oil.

Long Hill Auto Service PCV valve replacement in Millington: PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. It's a little part that releases pressure from the engine. It can get gummed up and that can lead to engine damage. It just needs to be changed now and then.

Long Hill Auto Service power steering service: Often overlooked. Your friendly and knowledgeable Long Hill Auto Service technician will evacuate the old fluid, clean out the system and replace it with clean fluid. Keeps the vehicle system running well for a long time.

Long Hill Auto Service serpentine belt service: That's the belt that powers the vehicle engine's accessories like the alternator, air conditioner, power steering and brakes. You'll want to replace the serpentine belt before it breaks, because that'll shut you down.

Long Hill Auto Service shocks and struts: This starts with an inspection of the suspension components. Shocks last a long time and wear out slowly, so many Millington drivers don't notice when it's time to change them. If they're worn or leaking, they need to be replaced.

Long Hill Auto Service transmission service: This involves removing the transmission fluid and replacing it with clean fluid. It's like an oil change for your transmission.

Long Hill Auto Service tire rotation and wheel balancing: The tires are rotated from front to back using the recommended rotation pattern. This helps tires wear more evenly. Wheels need to be balanced from time to time to keep them turning without any wobble or bounce. Helps the ride and saves tire wear.
